How to improve England’s football team …

Why are England such an over-rated and under-performing team? Unfortunately, it’s too simplistic to provide just one answer. Being a fan is such a frustration as we are not only always ultimately disappointed, but always in a predictable way. Let’s try and list a few ideas here, and build the debate from there.

Glazer & Manchester United

Hmm, the old adage of “time’s a great healer” springs to mind; all them fickle souls (and all footy/soccer fans are fickle – fact!) who thought Glazer was the Doomsday scenario. Wonder how many of them who ‘left’ the fold, amidst some frankly OTT media frenzied (created?) scenes, are burning back to Old Trafford now the team is on it’s best run in recent seasons.

Reality TV – why are we still watching?

Ultimately it’s voyeurism by proxy – we want to know all about other people’s misfortune without any risk to ourselves. Here in the UK we seem to be the market leader in reality shows, we can’t produce enough tat to satisfy our appetite for ‘Schadenfreude’ so we’re importing it by the bucketload.

Networking gaffe

So there I was, sat having a quiet meal in my local this evening. Quiet night for me, and the pub, only about 10 people all told inc. staff.

Next thing, around 8 people came in (all clearly familiar with each other), and the ‘leader’ started putting a notice board up, swapping/placing notices etc.

I saw she had a badge, Link NW or something, and – me being the sociable, engaging soul I am – struck up a conversation with her. It should be noted at this stage, being both a businessman & an opportunist, I thought it was a Biz networking event I could crash.

However, I was soon brought down to Earth when she explained they were a singles club, at which point I fumbled for my book & made my excuses ….
